This is a shot of our meeting with one of the dugout canoes -- Andean Indians in the Strait... the woman always manned the stern with the paddle.....Pop sat up front with his fishing rig and pointed where he wanted to go. Our sailors swapped 55 pounds of peanut butter, coffee, and old dungarees with holes in the knees and received all sorts of handmade "wampum" in these strange encounters. Our young Chilean Pilot from their Coast Guard - that accompanies every ship thru the Straits... (their charts are held top Secret by the Chileans) - told us that the reason so many of the night navigational aids were not lit - was because these indians stole the whale blubber/oil used to light the lamps in the hand-made stone lighthouses throughout the waterways!!!
