Captain William B. Murray Jr.
Groton, CT--Capt.
William B. Murray Jr., USN (Ret.), 84, of 117 Spyglass Circle in Groton, died Tuesday Nov. 29, 2005 at the Avalon
Health Care Center in Mystic.
Born in New London on ,June 27, 1921, he was the son of William B. and Ruth B.(Lounsbury) Murray and of a family
that dates back to Jonathan Brewster and John Picket, circa 1650. He graduated from Chapman Technical
School in June of 1939 and entered the U. S. Navy in September of that year as an.apprentice seaman. He was commissioned
an ensign on Feb.15,1944.
Capt. Murray was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. During his naval career, he served in the North
Atlantic and the Pacific, earning five battle stars as well as numerous commendations, decorations and other medals.
He retired as a Captain, USN, on May 1,1979, having had command of four ships, three of which were destroyer/cruiser
types.
His educational degrees include the University of Florida, the Armed Forces Staff College. McGill University Arctic
Institute and the Army War College.
He was a member of the Brainard Lodge of Masons, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, U.S. Naval Institute, Navy League,
U.S. Army War College Alumni Association, Retired Officer's Association. Society of Mayflower Descendants, and
the Mystic Seaport.
Capt. Murray's hobbies included golf, video photography, computers, writing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Murray, of Groton; two daughters, Nancy Shelton, of Norfolk. Va., and Janet Bainbridge
and her husband, Richard, of Virginia Beach. Va.; three grandchildren. Adriane Shelton, of Norfolk, and Cheryl
and Leigh Bainbridge, both of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Jane Doyle, of Groton, and Elizabeth Newton and her
husband, Gerald, of Groton; a brother:John Murray and his wife, Gail, of Englewood, Fla.; and a brother-in-law;
Richard Green Sr, of Groton.
He was predeceased by a sister Dorothy, and a brother-in-law: Frederick Doyle.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Burial in
the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may go to the charity of the donor's choice.
